Mijn eerste bezoek aan de USA.

My first visit to the USA.

At first, everything is still far away and almost incredible to me, but time is flying and in March 2017, I started composing an, in my opinion, beautiful and interesting presentation. I have been presenting for many years for aquarium and terrarium associations, but never in English. That’s why I started to learn some relevant sentences and words in English. A very big advantage is that scientific names globally are the same. Perhaps the pronunciation is a little different. As far as necessary, I also processed them in the presentation itself.

A style from the 1930s by Aquascaping Love · December 18, 2013”.

On the internet, I found an interesting article that properly depicted the Dutch style and summarized it. I used that as a basis for my presentation: Dutch Aquarium Aquascape: A style from the 1930s by Aquascaping Love • December 18, 2013. This article actually contains all the aspects I wanted to show and explain to the Americans in my own way.

To begin with, I wanted to show some Dutch top-aquaria and also some Belgian. I wanted to give a good impression of the differences between a competition through pictures and through certified examiners who come to your home. I also wanted to pay attention to the role played by the Dutch NBAT during its existence and, of course, to the levels of club, district and national competition. Furthermore, I found it interesting to show the aquariums, as much as possible, positioned in the (living)room where they stand. I wanted to pay attention to the differences between Nature Style and Dutch Style, and finally, I wanted to pay attention to my own aquarium.

When I finished composing the presentation, I showed it once to my wife Alice and later to Willem van Wezel to provide me with feedback. Both were excited about it. There were only two points of concern: a) I had reduced the size of the pictures for the presentation considerably and would they still be sharp enough for projection on a big screen? b) The number of images I had processed, including doubles because of texts, was around 200, about the same number as in my evening-filling presentations for the clubs in the Netherlands. Would that not be too many? I decided to let it be. Better too many than too less.

We vertrokken rond 07.00u.

Wednesday April 26th it finally was time to go. Tuesday before I had been working and Alice had prepared and packed my suitcase neatly, taking into account the strict customs policy that would be conducted in America today. Alice would bring me to the airport. The last two days they warned on the news for unacceptable long waiting times at Schiphol, so we decided to leave from home on time. We left around 07:00. Fortunately, it was not so busy on the road as was suggested.

It was not busy at Schiphol at that time and Alice had already checked me in digitally. Not all the seats in he plane turned out to be booked and after a short while the man who sat next to me went to a row with some empty seats. That meant more space and comfort for me. During the take-off we heard some strange noises, but nobody really paid attention to it. Unfortunately, after 20 minutes in the air, we were informed that there was a malfunction of one of the engines and that we would return to Schiphol. As a result, a security protocol became effective and once landed we were escorted by fire trucks to a remote location on Schiphol. After a long wait, we were told that we would continue our journey with another plane. That plane first had to be prepaired for this flight. All together this caused a 5-hour delay. Delta Air had also to change the connecting flight from Minneapolis to Denver. In total, it gave a delay of 7 hours on the whole flight.

From that moment on my journey went smoothly. However, the luggage at Minneapolis had to be picked up and checked in by Security again. Customs formalities here were not so terribly strict as I thougt they would be. I was asked for the reason for my visit, but my Esta statement did not have to come out of my bag. At Minneapolis, I had to wait two hours for the flight to Denver. I discovered that the sockets in America do not match the European plugs, so I bought an adapter at the airport to be able to charge my phone at a restaurant here. The flight to Denver was a domestic one and from the start without any problems. Only the turmoil when landing on Denver was a little bit disturbing, but apparently very common, so the stewardess told.
